If the first thing visitors to your website see is a popup box or “welcome mat”, then your website’s ranking in Google search will be penalized beginning January 2017.
Google’s goal with penalizing the use of popups and welcome mats is to provide visitors – especially mobile visitors – with a better user experience. If you regularly browse websites on your phone, you’ve probably seem popups that fill the entire screen and require you to click a tiny ‘X’ to close it.
The three types of “interstitials” (anything that comes between the user and your content) that will get your website in trouble with Google are:
- Any popup that covers the main content
- Any type of welcome mat or advertisement that visitors have to dismiss before accessing your content
- Any type of welcome mat or advertisement that pushes your main content below the fold
