The number of websites that link to your website and the relevance / quality of those websites is the biggest factor in how well your website ranks on Google.
On-site SEO (optimizing your website and content for search engines) is a critical first step in dominating Google search for your industry, but it’s not enough for really competitive keywords.
Here’s 3 ways you can get started right now (in order of increasing difficulty):
- Get your customers, friends, colleagues and suppliers to link to you. If they’re in the same industry as you, ask for a link!
- Find relevant and, if possible, leading websites in your industry and ask them to link to your website. A common strategy here is to offer to write a guest post on their blog and have that post include a link back to your website. In your offer to write a guest post, include a few titles of blog posts you could write. Needless to say, the titles should be so intriguing that the website owner would have a hard time saying no.
- Start a company blog and write awesome content. Few people have the time or passion to do this on a regular basis. If you don’t, decide whether you want to outsource content writing or simply accept reality and move on to other strategies.
